LIVE UNITED is being part of the change. It means by reaching out your hand to one, you influence the condition of all to create opportunities for better lives.

You can LIVE UNITED by giving through your workplace campaign, donating online or volunteering your time with a local non-profit through volunteer solutions. LIVE UNITED with Orange County United Way.

 

United Way is about building self-sufficient lives for the health of our community.

 

We do that through our Strategic Assessment Process, which thoroughly evaluates local human care services to ensure your contribution supports the most effective programs to help build self-sufficient lives in Orange County.

 

To achieve this goal, we focus on two approaches:

 

First: We support a safety-net of care to ensure that essential needs, such as food, shelter and medical care are met today

 

Second: We support solutions for long-term change focused on education and financial stability to move people from dependency to self-sufficiency tomorrow

Community Impact means providing individuals and families in crisis with basic needs today and supporting long-term solutions for self-sufficiency tomorrow. Orange County United Way does this by maximizing charitable dollars to have the greatest impact on the quality of life in our community.

Community Impact Priorities

Basic Needs: Now, more than ever before, Orange County families and individuals are in need of the most essential services including food, shelter and medical care. This past year we saw requests for food more than double over the previous year and requests for housing and rental assistance went up more than 40 percent. United Way is committed to supporting programs providing essential services to ensure Orange County residents live healthy, stable lives with independence and dignity.

Education: United Way supports programs for children and youth to prepare them academically, socially and emotionally to grow to be independent adults. The future of our children begins with their education and we are committed to supporting strategies that enable our children to reach their full potential.

Financial Stability: United Way supports financial education and job development programs that allow individuals to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to attain financial independence.

A percentage of operating costs go to support staff who work diligently to research the needs of the community, evaluate programs available to meet the needs and verify that the agencies running the programs are accountable. Staff also train agency partners on measurement tools so that we are able to report outcomes to our donors and the community and work with partners on ways to collaborate and consolidate to make programs most effective.

 

Orange County United Way is proud to operate below 20%. We keep our expenses low by committing to organizational efficiency; continuously looking at ways to reduce costs and eliminate waste; relying on volunteer support and in-kind contributions from partners.

The current state of our local and national economy has intensified the growing needs in Orange County. Families and individuals are searching to meet their most basic of needs including food, shelter, medical care and emergency services in ways our community has never experienced before.

2-1-1 Emergency Hotline Reports staggering increases in service requests in the last year:

  • ·         98% increase in requests for food (5,464 calls since July 2008).

    ·         42% increase in requests for rental assistance (6,112 calls since July 2008).

    ·         77% increase in requests for legal assistance (1,462 calls since July 2008).

    ·         84% increase in requests for counseling (2,170 calls since July 2008).

In addition to ensuring a safety-net of care, Orange County United Way also supports solutions for long-term change focused on education and financial stability to move people from dependency to self-sufficiency.

When giving to United Way are we paying for multiple overhead costs, United Way and the agencies they fund?

Although both United Way and the agencies we fund may have overhead costs, United Way funds specific programs within agencies that must show measurable outcomes, community impact, efficiencies in operations and sustainable revenue.   United Way focuses on program effectiveness, which includes the Return on Investment for any allocation we make with community dollars.

  • United Way is the largest private human care funder in our community, working to measurably improve the quality of life for all Orange County residents.
  • United Way has been serving Orange County residents since 1924.
  • Orange County United Way is a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization governed by local community leaders who make the decisions for raising and distributing funds in our community. We are not a chapter or franchise of United Way of America.

  • Our partners include 1,200 Orange County businesses, schools and local city, state and federal governments and human service providers, and over 80 local agencies to leverage our strengths as a community to provide a safety-net of care and to provide long-lasting solutions of the human care issues in Orange County.

Last year, Orange County United Way supported programs and collaboratives that touched more than 100,000 households in need of basic services including food, shelter, medical care and emergency services.  United Way partners with health providers, higher education, state and local government and others who share our goal of improving lives to make the greatest impact in our community.  By connecting resources, and uniting voices, we are able to leverage our strengths as a community to provide a safety-net of care to meet people’s basic needs today and build a better tomorrow.

Last year, Orange County United Way committed:

·         $413,000 to food programs

·         $392,000 to housing services

·         $917,000 to emergency services

·         $1,157,000 to medical care

·         And a total of over $6,590,000.00 towards deserving Orange County families and individuals in need.

Federal, state and local governments have made extreme cuts in funding to non-profit agencies. Many agencies have faced reductions or elimination of much needed funds. Now, more than ever, it is up to caring, forward-thinking people to maintain the services that support the health and well being of Orange County residents.

Your gift to United Way will help ensure a healthy community for Orange County.  The leadership of your United Way is accountable for efficiently funding organizations that provide measurable results while keeping overhead at, or below, 20%. United Way has a written policy against coercion. Donations should be given willingly and voluntarily. We are confident that when people see where their money is invested, they will want to contribute. If you feel pressured to give, please inform Orange County United Way at 949-660-7600.

Some do and some don’t. Agencies are not 100% funded by Orange County United Way, so some find it necessary to charge fees to cover some costs. People are charged according to their ability to pay.

Giving is a personal decision based on individual circumstances. As a guide, many salaried employees contribute from 1.5 to 3% of their annual salary. Hourly employees find that investing two hours pay per month is a simple yet effective way to help those in need.
